I was not compensated for this post. I received cheese from Punk Rawk Labs in exchange for this review; all opinions are entirely my own.
I haven’t eaten a piece of meat since 1997 (at least, not to my knowledge anyway) and have over the years figured out a meal plan that is for the most part both healthy and nutritious. Something that I have noticed, however, is that meat eaters always freak out when they’re hosting me for a dinner party. Or a holiday like Thanksgiving. Here’s a little secret: I’ve never left the table hungry. Sure, some days I’m filling up on salads and sides, but I eat what I eat because thankfully I’m not picky.
That said, I decided to dedicate today’s post to a really yummy fixin’ anyone can serve next Thursday. This recipe has been adapted from Vegan Nook (click here for more details) and it will be a HUGE hit for any vegan/veggie or meathead. Promise 🙂
What you’ll need:
1/2 package Smart Dogs or other vegan hot dog (I used Whole Foods brand)
1 package organic crescent roll dough (Immaculate brand is delicious and fluffy!)
1 jar of Shishito Gold Mustard from Punk Rawk Labs for dippin’
What you’ll do:
Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Roll out the dough into triangles as instructed on the package. Cut the dogs in half and place each inside the doughy triangles. Fold the dough around the dog so it hugs (make your piggies snuggly!). Arrange on a cookie sheet (I like to use parchment paper but use your discretion) and bake until golden brown (roughly 12-16 minutes). Let cool, dip in mustard, and eat. Enjoy!
I wasn’t sure what to think about the Shishito Gold mustard before I received it. Maybe it was the “made with mushrooms” part, but I’m not kidding when I say that it’s absolutely delicious. And it doesn’t taste remotely like mushrooms, in case you were curious 🙂 It’s an earthy blend reminiscent of horseradish (yes, it will clear out your sinuses!) and a very sharp mustard. It was made to complement the Cashew of the Woods Nutmilk cheese, which I like to eat on my own from the package because I am a weirdo. This stuff is very addicting and perfect for daytime, guilt-free snacking. This particular cheese is flavored with button, crimini, and shiitake mushrooms, black and white truffles, celeriac, and white pepper–all high-quality ingredients that pair incredibly well together in this soft cheese.
If your family is like mine (awkward, loud, sometimes obnoxious, always hungry) this would be a prefect icebreaker to get the party started. Set it and forget it and then watch family members swarm. Also if your family is like mine you’ll have an uncle who never got over the fact that you are a vegetarian and likes to remind you that all of your food is made with meat (lol). Gotta love family, right?
Due to the success of my previous Valentine’s Day vegan cheese giveaway (which received more than 800 entries), I’m excited to announce that I will be giving away another vegan cheese sampler pack from Punk Rawk Labs! AND!!! If you use code PIXIE50 at checkout, you’ll receive $5 off your first order! Score! Good luck to all and if you’re serving up any veggie sides at your Thanksgiving, I’d love to know about them! Leave them in the comments below.
