About three weeks ago my winter coat breathed its last breath. The stuffing had gone awry and I could barely lift my arms without Pig Penning all over the place (you know what I’m talking about). I decided I’d had enough of leaving a cloud of jacket remnants in my wake and embarked on researching a warm, comfortable, possibly even fashionable winter coat to replace the Sarah Jessica Parker blue bomber jacket I already owned.
I found it on my favorite website and clothing store, South Moon Under. Made by Andrew Marc, a designer I had never heard of, this olive-colored jacket promised warmth, comfort, deep pockets, a faux-fur lined interior/hood and all the bells and whistles I could have ever hoped for.
Naturally it came with a hefty price tag–$200!—but I had an early birthday coupon which brought the total down to about $130. I hemmed and hawed, entered my credit card information, called in Bryan for a second (and then third) opinion. Finally I clicked “purchase” and walked away.
It’s been over a week since I received my coat and I’ve worn it in public twice… with the price tag neatly tucked inside so no one can see. I’ve also worn my Pig Pen jacket at least a dozen times since.
Why can’t I cut the tag and assume ownership of a jacket I love? Is it because it feels indulgent to spend money on myself when I have other bills to pay (and a new car payment to focus on)? And why can’t I bear to throw out a jacket I bought for a steal in a teeny bopper clothing store in the Manhattan Mall nearly 10 years ago!?
When it comes to spending more than $100 on an item, I fret. Will this cut into my monthly budget, should I be making this purchase, is it fiscally responsible of me to pay for this when I have quarterly taxes around the bend and XYZ on the horizon?
Am I the only one who questions and drives herself nuts when I want to spend money on myself?
Inquiring minds want to know.

Did everyone have a nice Superbowl/weekend? I ate my face off yesterday and am fasting (not really but I should) today. XOXO
