Last weekend I had a friend call to tell me a piece of news I had been expecting for some time now. That my ex (you may recall him from some of my earliest blog entries) is now married. You never do quite know how you’ll react to something unless you hear it for yourself but I’m pleased to say there wasn’t a shred of emotion when the words cut through to my end of the line. I noticed the other half naked people enjoying a beautiful sunny day playing frisbee or reading magazines and I admired the view of the city skyline from my cozy patch of grass. The scent of suntan lotion was heavy in the air and I watched as a drop of perspiration trickled down my forearm.
“Really? That’s great,” I chirped into the phone readjusting my bikini to reapply lotion. I had been so diligent in my efforts to avoid a sunburn after the last time and I was hoping this would do the trick. My friend danced around the topic some more until I cut her off by saying, “Honestly, I’m totally fine. I expected it. I wish them the best,” and then I asked her a question about her kids.
I surprised even myself. I didn’t expect to feel a calm sense of peace fall over me. I’m happy he’s happy and that’s about all there is to it. Could have something to do with the hypotheticals and maybes and future plans I see when I look at the man who currently makes my heart skip a beat. Or the many projects I have been busying myself with lately. My lovely friends and family who always deserve a shout out. The reminders everywhere that summer is just around the bend and with it comes the promise of outdoor concerts (ie, more Phish!), reconnecting with friends, drinking outdoors, and trips to botanical gardens, beer halls, parks, road trips, and bbq’s.
“Hey, listen, I gotta get going. I’ll call you later, k? Thanks for telling me.”
I turned the volume up on my ipod and blasted Jimmy Cliff. I found a comfortable spot on my towel and smiled.
“Music maker, make me some music. Make a singer sing me a tune… If music be the sound that satisfies body and mind, fill me up right now with the most infinite kind that I’ll always have in store and I’ll never want no more.”
Happy Friday, folks! Hope you all have fun things lined up for the weekend. XOXO
