When I was young, I was often told that the high arch in my feet would make me a perfect candidate as a ballerina. Sadly, what no one knew at the time, was that I possessed the grace of an elephant. Though I attempted to enroll in various dance classes throughout the years, I got my start in dance way too late and elegance was something I simply couldn’t pick up, no matter how hard I tried.
Over the years, my high arch has given me some problems, especially when I go shoe shopping. If I’m lucky enough and stores carry my diminutive size 6 (or “tree stump,” as my father always says), I find there is little variety and even less in the way of arch support. The shoes I often find available in big retail stores are often flat along the soles. This means that after long distances, my knees start to buckle and my back begins to strain. Yes, I realize this is making me sound incredibly old. And no, I don’t know when that happened either.
I was recently contacted by a rep at Sole Provisions and she asked me if I’d like to try a product from their Orthaheel or Fitflops line. After some searching, I found a pair of shoes that I thought were both stylish and functional and so I ordered these Vionic shoes in Sierra Mustard. I was delighted when they arrived in the mail just two days later; the colors are far richer in person than they are on the website and they are perfect for fall (PS: this color was all the rage on the runways at New York Fashion Week!). They slip on really easily and I love that there are no laces–it gives them a cute loafer look.
I must warn you: it will take some time to break into these shoes. They are very sturdy and don’t give like ordinary canvas shoes will. Once I figured that out and rotated my feet left and right within the shoes, they started to feel a bit more comfortable. I wore them consistently for about a week and there were some growing pains–these are different from other shoes I’ve had to break in–but once they were worn in, they were incredibly comfortable.
Designed to promote healthier posture, Orthaheel shoes were invented by leading Australian podiatrist Phillip Vasyli and recommended by wellness physician Andrew Weil. These shoes feature a built-in, lightweight biomechanical Orthaheel footbed that supports your feet while helping to realign the lower legs and improve posture. Every style is made with a durable rubber outsole with wave-patterned tread that helps improve traction on hard or wet surfaces.
But what I like the most? The shoes I ordered are 100% vegan (which is also not always the easiest to find when shoe shopping).
