put it in the boogie

I would like to encourage you all to visit the blog of a dear coworker of mine. Emily is a super beautiful girl, both inside and out, and I hope you’ll be so kind as to show some love to her fabulous blog. Her corner of the web touches on many things we can relate to, from finding love in the big city to keeping friends when bridges and tunnels get in the way. emilyinnyc.wordpress.com/

Last week was a very strange week. Not necessarily strange in a bad way, but I felt off somehow. I blame the fact that there were entirely too many extreme highs and lows. Extreme highs: going to see Jackson Browne at the Beacon Theater, taking an amazing Bikram class, and dancing my ass off at the Zach Deputy boat cruise (but I’ll get back to that later). The lows: oversleeping for work and feeling like I was hit by a mack truck, receiving bad news about the family dog (though he seems to be doing better now), and having to contact the ex. I won’t get into details but I will say that our email exchange affirms why we are no longer together. (And, for the record, the only reason I contacted him was to find out if he’s attending a concert I want to get tickets to).

Friday night while I was out for tapas with some girlfriends I filled them in on the details. And then, all of a sudden and out of the blue: waterworks. It may have been the sangria talking but clearly I had some things weighing heavily on my mind. And what really surprised me was that I found myself thinking about Brandon, the 26-year-old I described in my last post, and I was upset I hadn’t heard anything from him. Do I like him? Can I ever get beyond the age difference? Am I just lonely? I haven’t quite figured out the answer to any of those questions just yet.

But Saturday rolled in and I rolled out of bed, assaulted with a killer hangover. My brother arrived late afternoon, we went out for dinner, and then met up with friends for a 30th birthday party on board the Half Moon to hear Zach Deputy. For those of you unfamiliar with his music, he is a one-man band and is known for his looping skills. He has amazing musicality and rocks the house (or boat) by blending reggae, calypso, and funk. His shows are a giant dance party and I haven’t stopped listening to him since I went to see him Saturday night. Right now he’s tops on things that rock my world. That evening he served up some chicken pot pie and I danced with reckless abandon, happy to leave the memory of my tear-soaked cheeks behind.

And then this happened:

thanks to zach deputy's gentle soul
for lifting my spirits

I got to meet the man himself and he’s every bit as sweet and genuine in person as he is an uber-talented performer.

All is right in the world yet again.

26 is the magic number

This past weekend I celebrated the recent engagement of a dear friend from college to his long term girlfriend. We went out for dinner and drinks in Queens and then moved to an awesome bar in Williamsburg called Barcade. Think Qbert, Paperboy, Pac-Man, Frogger. I sucked at them all but I blame it on the pitcher of mango margaritas and the absurd amount of captain-and-cokes I consumed before attempting to play any of them. [Read more...]

Birkenstocks on the beach

On Saturday, my girlfriend and I went to the Jersey Shore to send a proper farewell to “Hurricane” Earl and to soak in the final rays of the summer. We managed to miss traffic (on a Saturday! Labor Day weekend!) and had a great time catching up in the car on the ride down. [Read more...]

in honor of women of achievement month

Today’s post is written for the Lady Bloggers Society, an overwhelmingly supportive group of bloggers I am immensely excited to be a part of. The submission is on women of achievement and while I do not in the slightest way possible feel I am worthy of inclusion in such a category, here is a post about what I am proud to have achieved in the last year. Hope this finds you all well in body and in mind. [Read more...]
